2019 Annual BBQ Event ANNOUNCEMENT: The annual Somali Community BBQ Event is coming up on the long weekend of Saturday June 29th 2019 at Waterloo Park from 12:00 PM - 8:00


Somali Language School for KG - Grade 12 students is now open every Sataurday from 9:00AM-To-11:30AM. Location is Forest Heights Collegiate Institute (255 Fischer-Hallman Road Kitchener).

Somali Canadian Association of Waterloo Region (SCAWR)

Background & Mission Statements
Somali Canadian Association of Waterloo Region (SCAWR) is a non-profit community association whose mandate is to enhance the lives of Somali Canadians and immigrants in Waterloo Region by motivating its members to actively participate in social service programs and by preserving their culture.

SCAWR is proud to offer and to create services that respond to the needs of the Community.

The Somali Canadian Association of Waterloo Region started in 1993, to facilitate awareness of Somali refugee needs. As the community was growing, it became apparent that there was a need for an association to help with settlement of the growing number of refugees and newcomers from Somalia.

Objectives
The main objectives of SCAWR are:

  • To promote fair access to employment, health, education, legal settlement and social services.
  • To provide comprehensive information and referral services to the Somali Community.
  • To facilitate the recognition of a distinctive Somali community in Waterloo Region through education, community outreach and interpretation and translation of documents.
  • Besides the Somali community, SCAWR also collaborates closely with Canadian, African, Arab, Asian; establishing a network with all community organizations and service providers.
  • To encourage academic excellence among youth members and exchange information on the matters of education.
  • To assist in immigration affairs and how Somalis would positively integrate into the Canadian society.

    • Youth counseling and advocacy
    • Immigration process assistant
    • Translation and Interpretation services
    • Orientation and workshops
    • Educational Services: Homework Program and Weekends Schooling
    • Housing and community legal services referrals
    • Family Counseling and support groups
    • Recreational Activities such as sport events for youth and kids
    • Creating sense of identity, community and cultural awareness
    Structure
      SCAWR structurally consists of three levels of administration:
